Final Defenses of the 38th Cycle of the National PhD in Sustainable Development and Climate Change

IUSS Pavia once again served as the stage for a landmark academic celebration, hosting the final dissertation defenses of the 38th cycle of the PhD in Sustainable Development and Climate Change . Over the course of several days in May 2026, candidates from all curriculum units presented the outcomes of years of dedicated research before their examining committees.The defenses covered a remarkable breadth of topics, reflecting the programme's multidisciplinary spirit and the urgent challenges of our time. From climate risk modelling and energy transition pathways to institutional governance and ecosystem resilience, each dissertation demonstrated both scientific depth and a genuine commitment to shaping a more sustainable world.

The atmosphere throughout the week was charged with enthusiasm and emotion, a reflection of the strong bonds forged within the PhD‑SDC community and the dedication invested over three years of study and research. Several students shared their impressions, expressing a shared sense of pride and gratitude for the journey they completed together. Following the formal sessions, graduates, supervisors, and faculty gathered to mark the occasion together, toasting to new beginnings and the many contributions these researchers will go on to make.A special highlight was the concluding seminar by Dr. Carlo Buontempo from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts - ECMWF, held on the final day.
