My name is Stefania Bianco, and I am a Natural Scientist enrolled in the National PhD program in Sustainable Development and Climate Change (PhD-SDC) at IUSS Pavia. My host university is the University of Pavia, where my research focuses on studying the effects of global warming and ocean acidification on fossil and living calcifying microalgae.
Currently, I am undertaking a 5-month research stay abroad at the Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals (ICTA) of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) in Barcelona, Spain. I chose to conduct my research stay here due to the necessity of utilizing specific tools available in select European cities, including Barcelona. Additionally, I am fortunate to collaborate with Professor Patrizia Ziveri and other outstanding researchers who are experts in my research field. Their collaboration significantly contributes to my academic growth and the development of my PhD project.
I had an immediate positive impression of the working environment, the team, and my supervisor. I was seamlessly integrated into the large and diverse group, characterized by gender balance and individuals from around the world.
Upon my return to Italy, I plan to analyze all the data collected during this stay, intending to produce at least one scientific publication. This experience has allowed me to grow significantly, acquire new knowledge, and develop greater autonomy in my work.
What I particularly appreciated is the positive, communicative, and stimulating working environment. The university offers various activities that facilitate socializing, such as coffee breaks once a week. A notable advantage is that the building in which I am working is not only aesthetically pleasing but also remarkably sustainable! I immediately felt at ease in Barcelona, a vibrant and stimulating city. During my free time, I had the opportunity to visit numerous museums and attractions, socialize with colleagues, and relax.
