Period abroad

Bergen, Norway

Hi everyone, my name is Chiara. I'm a marine biologist focused on the effects of Climate Change on Mediterranean marine species and their distribution. My period abroad ended one week ago. I spent it in Norway, at the Institute of Marine Research (IMR) in Bergen. The reason of this choice is that IMR is currently working with topics closely related to my research. I felt part of the group starting from day one. The building was very nice, I had my own office and got introduced to most of the team, except for those on survey. My supervisor was very welcoming and helped me figure out the first practical things. First weeks are very challenging due to the huge expenses.

Once back, I plan on finishing my research. These 6 months in Norway helped me grow up professionally and personally. I've learnt a lot about surveys, partnerships with other countries, FAO and Nansen projects and species of interest for the IMR. I also figured out how to manipulate big amounts of data, how to filter them and find what I need. I think I also made a contribution to their activities since they have never focused on Non-Indigenous Species and distribution's shifts.

Norway is surrounded by nature and this is something I personally loved. Just 20 minutes walk or 10 mins by bus and you would find yourself surrounded by forests, lakes or in the middle of fjords. I used to spend my free time trying to see as much as I could of Norwegian fjords and wildlife. I have seen dolphins just walking in the park near my house and I was lucky enough to witness Northern Lights!
