Tell us about yourself (Where do you study in Italy and Why did you want to do a PhD? Why did you select the SDC?
Hello, everyone. My name is Tosin Afeniforo, and I am in CU6 (37th cycle) of the PhD program in Sustainable Development and Climate Change. My academic career began in Zoology, with a focus on animal ecology, and I went on to study climate and society at the master's level. Now at SDC, I am investigating the nexus between plastic pollution and climate change.
Where were/are you during your period abroad, and how long did/will you stay there?
I wanted to do my period abroad where language will not be a barrier and English is spoken regularly. Malta and specifically the University of Malta provided such an opportunity. I stayed in Malta for six months. During this period, I engaged in various activities, including participation in classes, presentations, field work, etc. I carried out research focused on quantifying and evaluating the plastic debris abundance trapped by Posidonia Oceanica banquettes on Malta beaches.
What were/are your first impressions of the university, your supervisor, and the research team? Did you feel well integrated into the team?
I felt at home in the University of Malta; my supervisor and the staff members were very welcoming and helpful.
Did/Do you face any challenges during your time abroad? If so, what were they ?How did you solve them? What advice would you offer to colleagues preparing for their own experience abroad (particularly regarding administrative practices, funding, or opportunities specific to the destination country)?
Malta is a bit expensive being a tourist destination, particularly getting an accommodation can be difficult. There are a number of student accommodations that can be looked up before going.
What are your plans upon returning (or after your return) to Italy? Do you feel your time abroad enriched your research project and personal growth? If so, how? Additionally, do you believe you made a meaningful contribution to the activities at the host university? If yes, in what ways?
My period abroad in Malta was time well spent. I completed a study during my stay that forms part of my thesis and will be published. I made some important connections and networks for future collaboration. My research in Malta provided the first evaluated information on the plastic debris trapped within the deposits of Posidonia oceanica on Malta beaches.
What aspects of the local culture stood out to you (something you loved or perhaps found challenging)? Was there a favorite place where you enjoyed spending time, and how did you make the most of your free time?
Malta culture is dynamic and speaks much of ancient history, which makes the country attractive for tourism.
